Mitsubishi debuts huge organic LED display at CES 2011

Mitsubishi debuts huge organic LED display at CES 2011 The Consumer Electronics Show is underway in Las Vegas during the first week of January 2011 and the big news from electronics manufacturer Mitsubishi is that it has built one of the world's largest organic LED displays to showcase at the event.

OLED displays are far from being mainstream consumer items, with only very small screens using this technology found on smartphones. Mitsubishi's vast 155 inch OLED display is clearly targeted at the advertising industry and viewers will be blown away by its capabilities.

With nearly four metres of diagonal width on show, this is an LED display that will be perfect for signage and display adverts. The benefits of using organic LEDs are many, with energy efficiency sitting alongside impressive contrast ratios and viewing angles.

This is achieved in conjunction with class-leading slimness, made possible because each OLED develops its own light and colour, which means there is no need for a separate backlight as there is with traditional LCD displays.

Mitsubishi also deployed a large 92 inch high definition TV at CES 2011, although this is better suited to consumers with serious money to burn. It will be some years before affordable OLED displays are the norm, but, until then, commercial usage of the likes of the 155 inch LED display will bring this technology into the public eye, both literally and metaphorically.

Mitsubishi has not given any word on the pricing of this 155 inch LED display as of yet, but it is expected to become available in the coming weeks, as the model shown at CES is ready for production rather than being a prototype. Those looking for digital signage that really makes an impact will definitely be interested in getting hold of this type of display.
